More than 30 people, including women, were arrested during a protest in Dindigul on Sunday demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The All India Youth Federation (AIYF) and the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) organised the protest near the Dindigul railway station.
The protesters accused Kumar of depriving people of their voting rights in the name of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
They urged the Union government to remove him from office immediately and condemned the Centre for allegedly supporting the Chief Election Commissioner on the issue.
The protesters raised slogans demanding Kumar’s removal and criticised the Union government for remaining silent on the matter.
When they attempted to enter the railway station, police personnel deployed at the spot stopped them, leading to heated arguments and a scuffle between the two sides.
The police subsequently arrested the protesters and took them away, triggering tension in the area for some time.
