Roads in Nagapattinam town have begun to deteriorate with even light rainfall since the onset of the northeast monsoon, causing considerable inconvenience to motorists and residents.
Nagapattinam district has been receiving widespread rain due to the northeast monsoon, interspersed with spells of intense heat. Several roads in the town have been badly damaged, with potholes making travel difficult.
The Beach Road connecting the new bus stand with the old bus stand has become almost impassable. The road is used by a large number of people travelling to the old beach and the fishing harbour. Buses from Nagapattinam to various destinations, including Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Tiruchi, also ply along this stretch.
With the road badly damaged after even a small spell of rain, two-wheeler riders, autorickshaw drivers and motorists travelling in cars, buses and heavy vehicles are facing difficulties.
Residents have urged the district administration and the Highways Department to repair the roads in Nagapattinam town on a war footing.
Commenting on the poor condition of the roads, residents said the pothole-ridden stretches could disappear altogether if heavy rain lashed the town.
