Residents of Karuppayurani village in Madurai district have launched a protest demanding the permanent closure of a liquor outlet operating near government and private schools.
The outlet, recently opened in the Karuppayurani panchayat area, has drawn strong opposition from residents, who fear that its proximity to schools could affect students.
They also expressed concern that the outlet’s location in a residential area could make it difficult for women and children to move around freely and lead to safety issues.
Members of several residents’ welfare associations are staging protests, demanding authorities to shut down the liquor shop.
The protesters raised slogans such as “Eliminate alcohol, protect the village” and “Close the liquor outlet permanently”.
They urged the district administration to intervene immediately and take steps to shut down the outlet, citing its proximity to educational institutions and residential neighbourhoods.
In May, the Tamil Nadu government ordered the closure of hundreds of liquor shops that are within 500 meters of sensitive facilities such as schools, places of worship and bus stops. According to reports more than 700 liquor shops were taken down in the move.
