A total of 25,474 passengers travelled on the newly inaugurated Vadapalani–Poonamallee Bypass stretch of the Chennai Metro Rail network in just five hours on its first day of operation, according to Metro Rail officials.
The 14.64-km stretch was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, as part of the Yellow Line, the third corridor of the Chennai Metro Rail project. The Yellow Line is being developed over a total length of 26.1 km, connecting Lighthouse with Poonamallee Bypass.
Driverless Metro trains are being operated on the newly opened stretch. Passenger services commenced a few hours after the Prime Minister inaugurated the line.
As it was the first day of operations and a weekend, the stations along the route witnessed a heavy rush of passengers.
Although services were available to passengers for only about five hours on the inaugural day, 25,474 people used the new Metro stretch during that period, the Metro Rail administration said.
